2007 Indie Beauty Business of the Year
Lela Barker, Bella Lucce, South Carolina
IBN member since March 2005

Lela (pictured with IBN's founder presenting award) launched Bella Luccè (meaning "beautiful light) in 2003 as a single mother of two toddlers and following a difficult divorce. Faced with the prospect of taking a low paying job which would have left her little time with her girls, Lela seized upon the opportunity to turn her hobby of making sugar scrubs and lotions for her sister and other family members into a worldwide community of devoted fans of her decadent bath and body products. It all started when a friend took a few of her products into a local spa and emerged with an order for $3,000 worth of Bella Luccè goodness.

Lela has been instrumental in fighting the FDA Globalization Act of 2008. She is a passionate advocate for women worldwide and, where possible, sources ingredients, supplies and services in ways that help promote woman-owned enterprises. Bella Luccè products grace the shelves of 500 luxe spas and resorts from Los Angeles to Dubai. Of her IBN experience, Lela says, "Donna Maria has been an incredible mentor who has offered me (and fellow Indies) a seemingly limitless reservoir of guidance, inspiration and knowledge. IBN has helped me network and establish key relationships, provided access to essential market trends, business advice and promotional opportunities and kept me connected regarding critical issues of importance to the industry. Joining IBN was one of the single best business decisions I’ve made.” Lela is proud that each Bella Luccè product is still handmade in the company's bustling production kitchens by an amazing group of inspiring women who reflect Lela's commitment to a more natural approach to beauty.

2006 Handmade Beauty Business of the Year
Janae Chang, Raw Beauty, Arizona
Former IBN member

Raw Beauty started after Janae made a batch of lotion using a hand held mixer and some jojoba and sweet almond oil. She quickly saw that, when combined with her love for pampering herself, the skills she accumulated during a stint in culinary school could create something truly special. Today, lotion is still her number one selling product, but she also sells a variety of other goodies like cleansers, sprays, body scrubs, lip treatments, skincare products and mineral makeup.

Janae, a mother and wife, feels that her business allows her to perfectly balance work and family. "I love going to work every day, but I also love being with my family, and I feel I have created the perfect balance with work and family life, so neither one suffers," she says. "Being named Handmade Beauty Business of the Year is sincerely an honor. It symbolizes all of the hard work, dedication and passion that I put into my company every day."

2005 Handmade Beauty Business of the Year
Dennis and Kayla Fioravanti, Essential Wholesale, Oregon
IBN member since September 2000

Essential Wholesale has been twice honored as one of the Inc.500 fastest growing businesses in the country. A family business co-owed by husband and wife team Dennis and Kayla (pictured) Fioravanti, Essential Wholesale supplies natural and organic cosmetic bases, including lotions, creams, shower gels and body oils, as well as a unique private label program for very small companies.

Launched in 1998, Essential Wholesale began with a small selection of essential oils stored in the family medicine cabinet. Since then, Dennis, Kayla and their three children have grown the business to a multi-million dollar venture that has been instrumental in helping thousands of entrepreneurs experience success as small business owners. Says Dennis, "IBN is the best launching pad for businesses like ours. Through IBN, we have been able to network with other businesses and suppliers and have acquired many new clients that have become the backbone of our business."
